Biography

Greg Wilkinson is an associate professor of Ancient Scripture. He received a PhD from the University of Iowa in religious studies with a focus in modern Japanese religions and previously taught as the Japanese religion professor for the East Asian Studies Department, University of Arizona. His current research interests include Asian new religious movements, contemporary uses of the Buddhist Canon, and modern Japanese pilgrimage. One of his most recent publications is Reinventing the Tripitaka: Transformation of the Buddhist Canon in Modern East Asia (Lexington Press, 2017).

Research Interests

Current research projects include: New religious movements in 21st century Japan, the evolution of pilgrimage practice in modern Japan, the religious and cultural influences of digital editions of the Buddhist Canon, and Japanese Christianity during the Meiji period.

Teaching Interests

Current teachings interests include: comparative religions, modern Asian religions, and Asian religious texts.
