Secretary to Dean 1960–1967
Religious Education

I was hired in January of 1960 by David H. Yarn, Jr., Dean of the College of Religious Instruction, to be his secretary. I had just returned from the Southern States Mission a year prior to this and was familiar with Brother Yarn's father, D. Homer Yarn in Atlanta, Georgia. So Brother Yarn and I had a "connection" to begin with. This was the beginning of the friendships that were formed with the three Deans I worked with, as well as so many of the full and part-time faculty who were there during the 7-1/2 years I was there. After David H. Yarn, Jr. served, B. West Belnap was appointed Dean in 1962 and served in that capacity until he passed away on January 13, 1967, from a brain tumor. Then Roy W. Doxey was Acting Dean. I terminated my position on Friday, July 15, 1967, and my firstborn daughter arrived on the 17th.

Not too long after I had been hired, I remember a meeting that was held in the Joseph Smith Ballroom for all the Religion faculty and possibly included members of the Seminary and Institute faculty at BYU. The speaker was Boyd K. Packer, who worked with William E. Berrett, Head of the Seminary and Institute faculty. I remember feeling the Spirit so strongly through his talk and thinking, "Oh, My! He sounds like he should be an Apostle!" On September 30, 1961, he was called to be an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve.

I learned that these men that were teaching religion at BYU were very spiritual, had a good sense of humor, and had health issues and other problems just like the rest of us! It was a very "busy" employment, but was very delightful, and I learned and "stretched" much because of it!
