Doctoral Student Grant

Religious Education at Brigham Young University offers grants each year from private endowment funds to a number of Latter-day Saint doctoral students who are attending accredited institutions of higher learning. These grants are administered by the Religious Education, for students studying in a discipline related to the teaching and research the mission of BYU Religious Education. They are primarily designed to assist students in completing their doctoral dissertations, but some needs-based applications may also be considered for students who are enrolled in their PhD coursework.

Grant Description:

Typically, the RSC will award several grants each year in the $2,000–$3,000 range that students will receive as a stipend for tuition, academic travel, books, and other legitimate research-related expenses.

Eligibility:

To be considered for a grant you must be:

  • A member in good standing of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Admitted into an accredited, full-time Ph.D. program.
  • Studying in a discipline related to the teaching and research missions of Religious Education at BYU.

Grant recipients may reapply in subsequent years if they continue to meet these eligibility requirements. However, a new application with updated materials must be submitted for every new year funds are requested. These updated materials must include a specific indication from you of the progress you made on your dissertation with the funding we granted you last year and indication and assessment from your advisor in his/her letter of support of the progress you made in the past year. It is anticipated that most recipients will only be eligible to receive the grant up to three total times.

Applications must include these required items to be considered:

  1. Submit the form and other required documentation only when all is complete.
  2. A letter of recommendation on letterhead stationary from the chair of your dissertation committee indicating your academic progress and his/her support for your application.
  3. A letter on letterhead stationary from your current LDS bishop affirming your ecclesiastical good standing.

These two letters must be sent directly to the BYU address below, not to you.

Your completed application and letters must be received by the third Friday in March to be considered for funding for the next academic year (applications are not taken on a rolling basis, so submit in March).

Notification is usually made by the end of April. Funding will generally not be available until 15 July or thereafter.
